Today, we want to help answer all of your wedding invitation questions!
Click To TweetOrdering wedding invitations should be a simple and fun process.
Here are the ten questions we are most commonly asked about wedding invitations and what you need to know for your special day!
1. Is It Okay to Invite People to the Ceremony and Not the Reception?
Most wedding etiquette experts would say no… but this rule was meant to be broken! We have seen a ton of lovely events feature a ceremony with a larger guest list, and then a family-only reception. The key is that the ceremony needs to offer cake, appetizers, and time for everyone to mingle and enjoy themselves. Think of it like a mini reception!
2. Do We Have to Give Every Guest a Plus One?
Not at all! This rule falls completely to your preference (and budget). We recommend extending this courtesy to people you know are either engaged or in a long-term, serious relationship.
3. When Should I Send Save the Dates?
Save the Dates are traditionally sent 5-8 months in advance. However, this rule is more of a goal. Save the Dates can be sent out as early as the date is picked, and as late as 4 months.
4. Are Save the Dates Necessary?
Save the Dates are a great way to ensure people don’t book travel or other events on your wedding day, but they are not necessary. We suggest looking at your budget and timeline to help make this decision, and if you decide not to send them, notify important friends and family members of your wedding date as soon as possible through texts, calls, or emails to be safe.
5. When Should I Send My Wedding Invitations?
Anywhere from six weeks to three months before the big day is the sweet spot. If you’re having a destination wedding, we recommend sending invitations further in advance to give your guests time to make all of their travel arrangements.
6. What If I Have Overseas Guests?
If you have guests who will be attending from overseas, or local guests who travel often, we recommend giving them a call, email, or text letting them know the date of your wedding as far in advance as possible.
7. When Should I Order My Wedding Invitations?
Our Hitchbook promise is a quick turnaround time and exceptional quality that will wow your guests! For our one-of-a-kind booklet wedding invitations, we suggest ordering 2-3 weeks before you need them.
8. When Should Our RSVP Deadline Be?
2-3 weeks before the big day is recommended. This should give you plenty of time to let your caterer know the final headcount and finalize the seating chart.
9. Do I Need to Include the Dress Code on the Invite?
Most guests will assume the attire is semi-formal, so if you are doing a black tie or casual event, we recommend including a dress code on your wedding invitation.

10. Do We Have to Invite Children?
No. This depends on your personal preference, venue seating, and wedding budget. Many weddings will include an age restriction so only children of a certain age can attend, or let couples know in advance that they will need to arrange childcare.
We hope these answers helped you! Now the next time somebody asks you, “When should I send my wedding invitations?” you’ll be ready with all of the information!
