Making your wedding stand out (in a good way) isn’t always easy. How do you make your wedding represent YOU? We are going to unpack some easy ways to set your wedding apart and create a memorable wedding, from the ceremony, reception, and food, to using book-style wedding invitations!
We LOVE weddings, and more importantly, we LOVE uniqueness. Uniqueness is what makes life so fun!
That’s why one of the number one things brides and grooms are looking for is ideas on creating an affordable, memorable, and dazzling wedding event. And we’re here to help.
Did you know that we were created with a desire for STORY?
It’s true! That’s why we love movies, books, or why the dances that told stories on So You Think You Can Dance were always our favorites (just us?). When we give something a story, we connect with it, remember it, and can even be inspired by it.
That’s why we believe that the best way to make your big day something people will never forget is to make your WEDDING tell a story.
MAKING YOUR WEDDING TELL A STORY
Imagine this: You’re invited to Stacy and Kevin’s wedding. Stacy and Kevin met at their local coffee shop because they both drink WAY too much coffee. They started talking there, and then one day, when Stacy arrived, Kevin already had her drink waiting for her. They ended up talking for hours! The rest was history… Now, it’s their special day. Here is a way they could create a beautiful, custom experience that helps their guests STEP INTO their love story.
Stacy and Keven set the tone for their event by telling their guests this adorable story through their wedding invitation, and then invite all of their guests to join them at a beautiful venue in their favorite part of the city. They spent most of their dates just down the street! For their reception, they have an incredible coffee bar where people can sample different types of espresso and coffee, including a custom blend of coffee named after them. As a gift to guests, a small bag of this custom coffee is waiting at each chair!
When you give the elements in your wedding a theme—a common story they are all telling—the result is too beautiful for words.
So, the question is… what story should your wedding tell?
Check out our top 5 ways to set your wedding apart below! And be sure to check out our line of unique wedding invitations, personalized where YOU can tell YOUR love story.
5. Show-stopping Ceremony Elements
Choose ceremony elements that reflect elements of your love story and personality, like personalized vows, walking down the aisle to a custom written song, or even a pre-service video that shares well-wishes from your bridal party and their perspective on your relationship. Your guests will appreciate the personal touch!
Meet with your officiant to review the ceremony, and even ask him or her to include certain poems, scriptures, stories, or references that have deeper meaning to you as a couple.
Here are some of our favorite ideas to incorporate into your ceremony:
Include your pet
Use custom vows
Write or sing a custom song
Include pictures or videos
Use an officiant that has special meaning to your family
Have fun with the attire for your flower girl or ring bearer
Have a family member or friend sing
Remember, your guests are attending because they love you and want to be included in your special day… so, keep the focus on who you are as a couple! Don’t be shy about changing things up or going against the status quo!
4. Fabulous Food!
Isn’t it time to ditch the chicken and potatoes? Honor your ancestry with cultural foods, or find an up-and-coming culinary genius in your area to create a custom menu that speaks to your soul. Many brides are incorporating fun, unique, unusual, scrumptiously new cuisine into their reception. From tacos, bbq, or pho, to donuts, mochi, and milkshakes, brides are taking risks and having fun with it!
People always appreciate good food, so this is an easy way to communicate your love story and score some extra brownie points! (No pun intended.)
If you don’t appreciate gourmet food as much as you love the Chinese food down the street, then have your favorite Chinese restaurant cater instead of an expensive wedding caterer!
Ask yourself: what will we actually be EXCITED to eat after our wedding ceremony?
There are a ton of ways to customize your wedding through your h’or devours, entrees, drinks, and desserts. What about creating a custom drink or dish that’s inspired by your love story?
Too many brides get swallowed by the opinions of their bridal party, in-laws, or family. Word of advice: it’s your special day, so choose what is going to make you the happiest. And, as a bonus, people will feel like they are getting a closer, more genuine look at who you are as a couple!
Your venue is a great way to tell your guests more about who you are as a couple, how you met, and what you enjoy doing together. Sure, choose a venue that’s beautiful (and photographs well), but also ask yourself: is there a venue we could choose that tells a story about who we are as a couple?
When you choose a venue that tells a story, it makes it a more memorable experience for your guests!
From barns to boxcars, the local church your grandparents wed in, or the local basement brewery, they can all be fun places to have a reception if it represents who you are as a couple.
We know that finding a venue that’s not booked out for 18 months can be challenging, so don’t be shy about approaching unique locations or the owner of the barn down the street to see if they are open to hosting a wedding. This is also a great way to find a cheaper alternative to one of the designated wedding venues in your area.
Just remember, your venue doesn’t have to be super expensive or extremely posh to be a fun place for a reception—it just has to say YOU!
2. Guest experience!
From party favors like custom playing cards or homemade candles, to reception experiences like hot air balloon rides or dancing instructors, it’s all about the surprise wow factors that will make your wedding live on in the hearts of your guests. Again, it doesn’t have to be super expensive to be super memorable or creative. Enlist the help of your creative, crafty, or talented friends and have a fun brainstorm to see how they can help you make the experience the party of the year!
Don’t play follow the leader here. Traditional wedding invitations are good for facts, name, date, location and time. But, they completely lack the ability to tell your love story to those you are inviting to your big day!
Remember, this is typically the VERY FIRST thing family and friends see when it comes to your wedding. This is a great way to establish a theme for your wedding or clue people into those special touches before they even arrive!
That’s why we created Hitchbook invitations. They’re book-style wedding invitations that invite your guests in the front, tell your love story in the middle, and have a detachable RSVP postcard in the back!
How did you meet, when was your first kiss, when did you know “they” were the one, how did the proposal happen? All this and more can be included in your invitation!
As they say, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” Your wedding invitation should do more than tell people a time and place—it should set the tone for your entire event!
